The number of programmed keys matters
Some vehicles let the owner add a compatible key when the required programmed keys are present. Use only the owner’s manual for the exact year, make, model, and key type.
Two programmed keys start the vehicle
The owner’s manual may include a procedure for adding another key. Follow only the instructions for the exact vehicle and key type.
Only one or no usable keys remain
Instructions that require two programmed keys do not apply. A replacement key or fob and professional programming may be needed instead.
What is the difference between cutting a car key and programming it?
Cutting shapes the physical blade so it can fit a mechanical lock. Programming makes a compatible chip or fob recognizable to the vehicle. Many modern replacement keys need both, but the two steps solve different problems.

The vehicle must recognize the correct key or fob before it will start. A blade that turns or a remote button that responds does not establish that this recognition is present.

Buttons may respond even when passive entry or starting the vehicle does not. A remote response shows only that specific function.

Passive entry and push-button start are separate tests even when both use the same nearby fob. The emergency blade remains a separate mechanical backup.
Can a used or online key fob be programmed?
Sometimes, but a matching shell or button layout does not confirm that the electronics, blade, functions, and earlier programming are compatible with the vehicle.
The exact vehicle matters
Use the year, make, model, start type, and reliable part information for that vehicle. A listing that names only the make or shows a matching picture is not enough.
The functions need to match
Starting, remote buttons, passive entry, remote start, and an emergency blade can require different features. Decide which functions the replacement needs to restore before choosing it.
Used and previously programmed fobs vary
A used, aftermarket, or previously programmed device may be compatible, locked to another vehicle, damaged, or unsuitable for reuse. Check it before the blade is cut or the return option is lost.
Key and fob programming questions
What does “No Key Detected” mean?
It means the vehicle is not sensing a usable key at that moment. A weak fob battery, wrong or damaged device, low vehicle voltage, interference, or a vehicle-side problem can cause it; the message alone does not confirm that programming is needed.
Does adding a new key remove a lost or stolen one?
Not automatically. Adding another key and removing a missing key from the vehicle’s recognized-key list are different requests. Tell KeyHive when a key is missing or stolen so the available options can be checked for that vehicle.
Will my existing keys remain usable after another one is added?
That depends on the vehicle and the programming method. If you already tried programming, explain how each device behaved before and after the attempt, and keep every key or fob that should remain usable available.
I changed the fob battery and nothing changed. Does it need programming?
Not necessarily. Compare the remote buttons, passive entry, starting, dashboard message, another fob, and the vehicle battery before assuming programming is the answer.
Is key cutting included in programming?
They are separate operations. Some keys need a physical blade cut as well as electronic programming; some fobs have an emergency blade; others may not need a blade for the requested function.
