A finished lock change still depends on the bore, backset, latch, strike, handing, door condition, and the hardware selected for the opening. Is this an existing lock opening or a new one?

- Replacing hardware in an existing opening starts with the bore, backset, door thickness, latch, strike, handing, and current cutouts.
- Adding a deadbolt or lock where no prepared opening exists is different from swapping hardware. Door material, placement, and the preparation needed for the opening determine whether mobile installation is practical.
- A new lock will not correct a sagging door, bent frame, failed hinge, broken glass, or severe alignment problem by itself.
Hardware should match the door and the way it is used
- Residential deadbolts and knobs commonly include Schlage B60, Kwikset 660 and 980, and compatible Defiant or Brinks hardware.
- Commercial cylindrical locks such as Schlage ND and SARGENT 10 Line families differ from mortise locks such as Schlage L and SARGENT 8200.
- Commercial exit hardware such as the SARGENT 80 Series is a separate door system, not a substitute for an ordinary knob or lever.
- A keypad or connected lock adds electronic features, but it still needs the correct mechanical fit and free movement at the latch or bolt.

- The door preparation: bore, backset, thickness, handing, edge, latch pocket, strike, and existing cutouts.
- The hardware arrangement: deadbolt, knob, lever, mortise case, cylinder, latch, strike, and any parts that need to operate together.
- The operation: whether the door closes freely and whether the latch or bolt enters the strike without lifting, pulling, or forcing the door.
- The intended use: home entry, office, retail entrance, rental, shared door, staff-only room, or another opening with its own access needs.
Model, grade, and finish do not confirm fit
Need a security lock installed or serviced on a home or business door? KeyHive installs and services many deadbolts, cylinders, levers, mortise locks, and other supported mechanical door locks.
- Grade, finish, smart features, and brand are useful specifications, but the lock still has to match the door preparation and intended use.
- Key control can sometimes be improved by rekeying dependable hardware instead of replacing it.
- Commercial electronic families such as Schlage CO and AD require a different assessment from a residential smart deadbolt.
- Exact parts, ratings, credentials, and available functions depend on the selected model and current manufacturer information.
Photos that help identify the opening
- Clear photos of both sides of the door, the door edge, the latch, and the strike.
- The current hardware brand or model and the proposed replacement model when known.
- What should change: different keys, new hardware, keypad entry, easier operation, or a different door function.
- For several doors, note which openings should use the same key and which must remain separate.
